90 minutes at Rock City (Lookout Mountain, GA)

In April 2023, on the drive from Nashville TN to Asheville NC, I saw seemingly endless advertisements for Rock City in Lookout Mountain GA near Chattanooga TN. A detour was in order...to SEE ROCK CITY.

This added about 70 miles + 1.5 hours to my route, but I’m glad I did. This garden and mountain-top attraction overlooking the border of Georgia and Tennessee is beautiful, quirky and really fun to explore. I could have spent a good deal of time and taken many more photos of this place. Unfortunately, as an unexpected impromptu visit, I had to keep it brief.

The "High Falls" (see below) was, in particular, what lured me to seeing Rock City in person. The waterfall is man-made yet spectacular nevertheless.

Other sights in Rock City, such as Lover's Leap, Needles Eye, Fat Man's Squeeze and the Swing-A-Long Bridge were all especially cool.

This is fascinating; in 1935, the owners hired a painter to paint “See Rock City” barn advertisements throughout the Southeast and Midwest United States. By 1969, over 900 barn roofs and walls, in 19 states, had been painted.

"From 1935 to 1969 some 900 'See Rock City' barns were painted by the hands of one man, Clark Byers. Traveling in his work truck across 19 states, Byers offered property owners a free paint job, passes to Rock City and promotional items in exchange for their ready-made advertising space." --Blue Ridge Country magazine.
