I had an idea to try in-the-waves photography using the waterproof GoPro 11 I picked up earlier this year.
I was hopeful a photo from this vantage might be neat, but it was difficult in the moment to know if it would actually work, especially without any real live preview available from the GoPro to check my composition and framing in the moment.
I tried anyway.
The results have surprised me!
Using the high quality video mode of the GoPro, it is actually possible to film video from within the waves and extract single frames at a reasonably good resolution and clarity.
Make no mistake; 99.9% of what I have captured is terrible, but there are fractions of seconds that are jaw-dropping.
Take for instance, the above photo from North Wildwood. Not only has this photograph been featured widely by Morey's Piers, Wildwood365 & others on social media, but it also appears in the Wildwood 2024 Calendar (it is good enough quality to print even at a high resolution)!
