Our New Live Streaming Rig at the University of Pennsylvania

At the Kelly Writers House at the University of Pennsylvania, we've been live streaming events on a near daily basis for years. We are really excited to be completely upgrading and overhauling our Arts Cafe performance space and technology for the first time in many years. Here's what our new live streaming setup will look like.

Panasonic AW-HE40SW PTZ Camera with HD-SDI Output

We'll have three pan-tilt-zoom cameras that are generally preset in certain locations on a tech track on the ceiling (but entirely movable as desired). Each camera will be individually controllable with a Panasonic camera controller. We really like these cameras because they're HD, easy to use, remote controllable and out of the way. These are outputting video in SDI but the PTZ functionality is over IP via the Panasonic AW-RP50 Remote Camera Controller.

Blackmagic Hyper Deck Studio

Each of our Panasonic PTZ cameras will run through a Hyper Deck Studio, which gives us the ability to record each camera feed individually. We have these recorders immediately in our chain so that we, at least, have a recording of each camera if any other part of the chain fails. We will also have another Hyper Deck after it is mixed and polished but before it goes to our Mac Pro for streaming. The Hyper Deck studio has both HDMI and SDI inputs and outputs and can record in UltraHD on the high end model.

Blackmagic Design ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K

The Blackmagic ATEM is the quarterback of our hardware setup and a tool we've considered for a long time. The functionality and features have only gotten better with the newest version and the price is right. All of our video and audio sources feed into the ATEM, which we can monitor, adjust and mix into a single output via the ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel control surface. The output is captured through a Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Recorder capture card into a Mac Pro for recording and live streaming.

Mac Pro

The one and only. The Mac Pro will be running Telestream Wirecast which will allow us to record our video and stream to destinations like YouTube Live, Facebook Live, Periscope and any other RMTP server. We will also be able to add on-screen graphics and edit our videos in Final Cut Pro.

Yamaha TF1 16 Channel Digital Mixer

We'll be using a Yamaha Digital Mixer to capture and route our various audio sources and connect it to our Blackmagic ATEM via XLR. To capture phone calls, we use a JK Audio box or Skype.
